Club Nicknames: The club's nickname is "The Cherries." The origin of this could be the cherry red striped shirts worn by the team or the fact that the stadium - then known as Dean Court - was built next to a large Dorset estate owned by an important family in Bournemouth's early development - the Cooper Deans - which featured many cherry orchards.

Origins: A.F.C. Bournemouth was founded in 1890 as Boscombe St. John's Institute FC, becoming Boscombe F.C. in 1899. To widen their local appeal they changed their name to Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic Football Club in 1923 before changing to their current name in 1972.
