History of Football: Celtic FC
Origins: Celtic Football Club came into being on 6th November, 1887 at a meeting in St. Mary's church hall in East Rose Street (now Forbes Street), Calton, Glasgow. It was formed by Brother Walfrid who was one of the Irish Marist Brothers - a Catholic religious community. His aim was to use the club to raise funds to help to alleviate poverty and deprivation in the East End of Glasgow. Walfrid had himself been inspired by members of the immigrant Irish population who had formed the Hibernian club in Edinburgh, through the Catholic Young Men's Society, in 1875.
